Thu, 8/12/10 - 9:44 am
By James W. Dolan, Special to the Reporter

A supporter of civil unions, I believed marriage was a term that should only be applied to heterosexual unions for historic, moral, and religious reasons. That for obvious reasons the union between persons of the same sex was different; not less loving or lasting or fulfilling, only different.

Thu, 8/12/10 - 8:00 am

It’s a bit of a joke, however in poor taste. Or it may be a stunning illustration of the cynicism that’s frequently invaded the issue. Or maybe even an honest effort to reform a process that has too long been allowed to bump along decade after decade with some odd patch-work, here or there.

The expansive array covering 25,629 square feet of rooftop on the campus will produce up to 40 percent of the school’s daily electric power with the panels generating almost 200 kilowatts at a given moment. The environmental benefits of such a system will be like planting nearly 24, 000 trees and conserving around 14, 000 barrels of oil.

Youth is served in Neponset

Thu, 8/12/10 - 8:00 am

Inside an iceless rink on a muggy Monday afternoon, five kids shot hoops as several hundred feet away a dozen younger children played with Lego blocks. In less than an hour many of them would head outside, spreading themselves out on a small section of Garvey Park to dance, sing and act.

And starting this fall, the same kids will have a chance to participate in a new flag football league on Friday nights and Saturdays.

Candidate Henriquez: Running for Leroy

Wed, 8/11/10 - 3:35 pm
By Carlos Henriquez

My candidacy can be summed up in the life of a 16-year old named Leroy that I met many years ago.
Leroy was raised in the heart of our district in Dorchester’s Bowdoin/Geneva neighborhood – Boston’s ground zero of violence. Like many growing up, Leroy was raised by loving parents. But in tough neighborhoods like Bowdoin/Geneva, where drugs and gun violence are a daily occurrence, love is not enough.

An update on C-11 police work from your lefty correspondent

Thu, 8/5/10 - 8:00 am

I’ve been writing this blurb for a good six plus years now and in that time we’ve gone through a lot together. The good times, the bad – and the very bad. I’ve also shared some personal information and observations and felt very comfortable doing so, as if talking face to face with an old friend. But something has been gnawing away at my conscience and I feel I must divulge this part of myself with you if we are to continue our friendship. So here goes:

It is contrived, to be sure, like so many other new wrinkles in the grand old game, including expanded playoffs, wildcards, and meaningless all-star exhibitions that are allowed to determine the highly meaningful home-field advantage in the World Series.

“Even if it ain’t broke, you can still tinker with it.”
