Kerry seeks halt to BC archive interviews probe

Teen arraigned in Conneely murder

A Boston teenager was arraigned on Jan. 16 in a Suffolk Superior courtroom for the murder last October of an Adams Corner Irish immigrant man and a subsequent double-shooting nearby that left another man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. John Graham, 17, pled not guilty to all nine charges— including first-degree murder in the Oct. 10 shooting death of 36-year-old Ciaran Conneely— and will likely stand trial for the crimes sometime next year. Dublin tot, family find hope at Boston hospital

After nearly a year-and-a-half spent in hospitals, operating rooms, and recovery units, a Dublin family’s lengthy struggle to secure a healthy future for their ailing daughter may finally come to a happy end here in Boston.

Fourteen-month-old Elie Madden was born weighing less than four pounds and suffering from esophageal atresia – a rare disorder in which her esophagus is too short to reach her stomach – and has spent much of her young life dependent on machinery to keep her fed and breathing. Read more

Taoiseach is bound for Boston

Ireland’s Taoiseach, Enda Kenny will be spending an overnight in Boston this month, his first visit to the Hub since his election as prime minister last year. The Irish leader will address a forum at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government on Feb. 16, and then make several appearances across the city over the course of the the next day. Read more

Sen. Brown backing bill to open up 10,500 visas for Irish

U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is pushing a bill that would provide 10,500 employment visas for Irish immigrants. Brown, a Wrentham Republican, filed the bill with U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican. Citing a “close bond” between the United States and Ireland, Brown said in a statement that “inefficiencies” in the national immigration program have led to “increasingly poor prospects” for Irish immigrants. Judge to BC: Give up IRA tapes

A federal judge in Boston has told Boston College that it must turn over recordings and other documents that are part of an oral history collection kept at the university’s Burns Library. The ruling is a major setback for BC and its allies who had sought to quash a subpoena triggered by a British request to view the documents as part of a criminal investigation into sectarian murders during the Troubles. The subpoena in question, issued last May and June, sought the records related to two individuals, Brendan Hughes and Dolours Price, both of whom were alleged to be former IRA members. BC has already handed over documents involving Hughes, who died three years ago. Read more

Teen charged with murdering Galway man in robbery attempt

A teenager has been indicted for allegedly killing Ciaran Conneely, a 36 year-old Galway man who was shot to death outside his Dorchester apartment building on Oct. 10. John Graham, 17, will be charged with first degree murder in Conneely’s murder, which rocked the Adams Corner neighborhood last fall. Read more

Some 400 well-wishers gathered at the Seaport Hotel on Oct. 20 to celebrate with the awardees at the second annual Boston Irish Honors event sponsored by the Boston Irish Reporter (Download complete program).

Dick Flavin was the master of ceremonies who, after a vigorous rendition of "Casey at the Bat," with Ted Williams playing the part of Casey, introduced the honorees:

State Sen. Tom Kennedy of Brockton; Kathleen O'Toole, who has served in law-enforcement posts locally and is now finishing up a stint as Chief Inspector of the Garda Force in Ireland; and three local families, the Corcorans, the Hunts, and the Mulvoys. Read more

replacing Vanessa Leite, who resigned her post in
