“The Saw Doctors offer wistfulness, humour and small-town nostalgia.” New York Times
Celebrating 35 years on the road, acclaimed Irish rock band The Saw Doctors will play five US shows this summer, starting in Cleveland, OH, on July 18, with stops along the way in Chicago on July 19, Los Angeles on July 22, Boston MGM Music Hall on July 24 and finishing up in New York with a headline concert at SummerStage in Central Park on Saturday July 26.
Back in 1990, The Saw Doctors’ debut single ‘I Useta Lover’ climbed to No.1 in the Irish charts, staying a record nine weeks at Number 1 and going on to become the biggest selling Irish single.
Led by songwriting duo, Davy Carton (lead vocals) and Leo Moran (electric guitar), The Saw Doctors recently welcomed back one of their founding band members Pearse Doherty on bass guitar, vocals, penny whistle and wooden flute. The eight-man lineup features longtime members Rickie O’Neill (drums), Kieran Duddy (keyboards and accordion) and Tommy Carton (backing vocals) as well as acclaimed sidemen, Anthony Thistlethwaite (saxophone, formerly of The Waterboys) and Noelie McDonnell (guitar and backing vocals of The Whileaways). Ahead of the US tour dates, The Saw Doctors released a new single ’Same Oul’ Town’, recorded with the RTE Concert Orchestra, on Friday June 27 on all digital platforms.
“It was an amazing experience to be backed by the RTE Concert Orchestra” says Davy Carton, “without a doubt, the highlight of my career.”
“I never imagined when we started out, we’d get a chance to play one of our songs with an orchestra” said guitarist Leo Moran, “The RTE conductor, Gavin Murphy, wrote a magical score for Same Oul’ Town.”
Discovered by Mike Scott of The Waterboys on a stormy Tuesday night in the Quay’s Bar, Galway, The Saw Doctors quickly grew a reputation as a live band, touring around Ireland and the UK, including a six-week stint with The Waterboys on the Fisherman’s Blues tour. The Galway band’s debut album ‘If This Is Rock ’n’ Roll, I Want My Old Job Back which includes the anthemic song ’N17’ has sold a half a million copies world-wide.
The Saw Doctors comeback tour in 2023 / 2024, following a five-year hiatus, was a resounding success, marked by sold-out shows in Dublin, London, New York, Boston and a barnstorming performance on the Main Stage at the Electric Picnic festival in Ireland.
Carrying the torch of resilience and still brimming with infectious energy, The Saw Doctors continue to solidify their place as one of Ireland’s most cherished bands, thrilling audiences both at home and abroad.
