Step into a pub in Dublin or Galway today, and you’ll find young musicians trading tunes that feel both timeless and thrillingly new. That same spirit will fill Suffolk Downs on September 6 and 7, as Seisiún Boston- presented by The Bowery Presents- brings together legendary performers and a bold new generation of artists, all sharing the stage in a celebration of Ireland’s rich musical heritage and its dynamic present.

On one end, you’ve got the torchbearers: The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, Mike Scott & The Waterboys, artists who built the foundation and gave Irish music its global voice. These performances will carry extra emotional weight as listeners remember Shane MacGowan, the Pogues' original frontman, who passed away on November 30, 2023, at the age of 65- an Irish music icon whose poetic legacy continues to resonate.

On the other end, a new wave of talent is surging forward: John Francis Flynn with his haunting reimaginings of folk, The Scratch fusing tradition with punk-like intensity, and other emerging voices honoring the roots while adding their own modern spark. As Liam Lynch put it, “What’s gonna make Seisiún so incredibly special is not just this really eclectic combination of genres of artists but the notion of them doing something together on stage… it’s gonna be a real moment in time.”

Lynch also spoke about the vital connection between past and future: “Look, I think Shane McGowan… is the poet laureate. He will stand in the annals of time as an artist whose work compares with Kavanagh, Yeats, and Brendan Behan. But what I think is his last and greatest final gift was to be an anchor and an inspiration for all these younger artists… embracing the roots while moving forward.”

That intergenerational dialogue is at the heart of Seisiún. It’s not just about sets on a stage- it’s about what happens between the artists, where traditions overlap, and music becomes something larger than any one performance.

Boston is the perfect home for it. Suffolk Downs, once the site of the great Fleadhs, now hosts a new kind of gathering, one that embraces the whole spectrum of Irish culture and is truly family-friendly. Beyond the music, the festival’s cultural village will feature step dancers, traditional sessions, crafts, storytelling, and kids’ activities, giving families a chance to learn, play, and dance together.
