Irish President McAleese Visits Boston Thru Thursday

McAleeseIreland President Mary McAleese is making a presidential visit to Massachusetts this week, arriving in Boston over the Memorial Day weekend. It marks her second visit to the area as President, and her first since 1999. During the visit, she visited western Massachusetts ad Worcester last weekend, and is meeting with Irish organizations in the Boston area thrusThursday, May 28.

Boston to Host 2013 Irish Dance Championship

An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha (The Irish Dancing Commission) has awarded Boston and the Hynes Convention Center the 2013 World Irish Dancing Championships. Boston won the event over 20 other cities around the world. This will be only the second time these championships are held in the United States and the first time they have come to Boston. Glasgow, Scotland, Dublin and Belfast are hosting the event through 2012.

Isn't yellow the most perfect, bright, cheery color for spring?

The male goldfinch at the thistle feeders have brightened up after a winter of drab coloring; forsythia and daffodils have bloomed and there's no doubt - fingers crossed - that spring is finally here and not a minute too soon for most of us.

What will I do without The Globe? Am I supposed to carry my computer to the kitchen table each morning to get the news "on-line" before going to work? What about my lifetime ritual of going to the door and picking up the paper before I put on the coffee?

It's too much to expect old timers like myself to cope with this new reality. I need the paper in my hands. I need to feel it, turn the pages, share it with my wife and even throw it in the recycle box.

If you've been in Boston for more than a few minutes, you've probably heard Joan Quinn Eastman's voice, and most likely seen her at a social event or even in a movie. The multi-media maven has been involved in Boston's emerging film and television business for years, but has recently taken on a few more projects that are bringing Eastman to whole new audiences.

"Business today means you have to have a lot of projects going. You have to be working on new projects...you can't be afraid of doing new things or using new technology," she says.

"IT WAS A SATURDAY MORNING in September 1944. The whole family was home except for my older brothers Jack and Leo. Jack was in the Army; Leo was in the Navy.

I was an eight-year-old bouncing a pimpleball off Mr. Bradford's stone steps at 12 Jerome Street, which stood right across from our house at the corner of Cushing Avenue and Jerome on Jones Hill in the Upham's Corner section of Dorchester, Massachusetts.
